For Whom Is a Picture Worth a Thousand Words? Extensions of a Dual-Coding Theory of Multimedia Learning
نویسندگان
چکیده
In 2 experiments, highand low-spatial ability students viewed a computer-generated animation and listened simultaneously (concurrent group) or successively (successive group) to a narration that explained the workings either of a bicycle tire pump (Experiment 1) or of the human respiratory system (Experiment 2). The concurrent group generated more creative solutions to subsequent transfer problems than did the successive group; this contiguity effect was strong for highbut not for low-spatial ability students. Consistent with a dual-coding theory, spatial ability allows high-spatial learners to devote more cognitive resources to building referential connections between visual and verbal representations of the presented material, whereas low-spatial ability learners must devote more cognitive resources to building representation connections between visually presented material and its visual representation.

Multimedia Annotation: Comparability of Gloss Modalities and their Implications for Reading Comprehension
This study compared the effects of two annotation modalities on the reading comprehension of Iranian intermediate level EFL learners. The two experimental groups under study received treatment on 10 academic L2 reading passages under one of two conditions: One group received treatment on key words in the reading passages through a multimedia environment providing textual annotations. The second...
متن کاملThe Effect of Pictorial Presentation of Vocabulary on EFL Learners' Retention
AbstractThis study aimed at examining the effect of pictorial presentation of vocabulary on EFL students’ retention relying on Dual Coding Theory and Additivity Hypothesis, both of which emphasize the additive effect of images on recall. To that end, 63 students who were in grade three of high school served as the participants of the study. They were randomly divided into three groups of still ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Multimedia Annotations on Iranian EFL Learners’ L2 Vocabulary Learning
In our modern technological world, Computer-Assisted Language learning (CALL) is a new realm towards learning a language in general, and learning L2 vocabulary in particular. It is assumed that the use of multimedia annotations promotes language learners’ vocabulary acquisition. Therefore, this study set out to investigate the effects of different multimedia annotations (still picture annotatio...
متن کاملEye-Tracking Method’ Usage for Understanding the Cognitive Processes in Multimedia Learning
Introduction: Designing multimedia learning environments should consist of the evidence-based study and principals about the human learning process. Eye tracking is a way based on the learner processing of learning materials which presented in multimedia learning environments. The aim of the study was to examine the use of the eye-tracking method to investigate the cognitive processes in m...
متن کاملAids to computer-based multimedia learning
Computer-based multimedia learning environments — consisting of pictures (such as animation) and words (such as narration) — offer a potentially powerful venue for improving student understanding. How can we use words and pictures to help people understand how scientific systems work, such as how a lightning storm develops, how the human respiratory system operates, or how a bicycle tire pump w...
